Shine Muscat grapes, a popular table grape variety known for its high sugar content and unique flavor, have been transported from Japan and planted in Korea and China to increase supply and lower prices while maintaining quality. Currently, China grows over 53,000 hectares of Shine Muscat grapes, while Japan grows approximately 1,200 hectares. The green grapes from China have a sharp, snappy texture that matures into a smooth, delicious consistency, with no stringy fibers in the center, making them a favorite among Asian fans.
Shine Muscat grapes are known for their sweet, flowery flavour with tropical fruit, honey, mango, and musk characteristics, averaging 18 Brix in sugar content. They are typically enjoyed fresh due to their seedless flesh and thin skin.
When storing Shine Muscat grapes, they are usually properly wrapped in plastic and can be preserved for up to one week when stored in the original packing in the refrigerator.
In addition to being a tasty snack on their own, Shine Muscat grapes can be used in various culinary applications. They can be served on fruit platters, used as a garnish for desserts such as tarts, cakes, fruit parfaits, and ice cream, or juiced to flavor gelato, fruit punches, cocktails, gummy candies, and shaved ice. In Japan, different muscat grape varietals are also widely used to produce light and aromatic sweet wines, and they are dried into raisins for long-term storage. Japanese muscat grapes pair nicely with spicy, salty, sour, or bitter meals, such as curries, meats like prosciutto or salami, nuts like almonds, peanuts, and pecans, carrots, celery, cucumber, and cheeses like blue, goat, or brie.
Shine Muscat grapes are a prized fruit that originated in Japan's Nagano Prefecture and has gained popularity in Korea, China, and Hong Kong due to their unique flavour, high sugar content, and versatility in culinary applications. With their delicious taste and distinct characteristics, Shine Muscat grapes are a favorite among fruit lovers and are enjoyed in various ways across different cultures.
