Spanish Melon

The Piel de Sapo melon has a light green to white flesh and a taste reminiscent of a mixture of honeydew and pear. It is delicious, aromatic and refreshing. When ripe, the Sapo melon has a subtle yellow colour and its ends will give way when pressed. Due to its mild flavour, the melon can not only be eaten pure, but also combined with creamy cheese and cured meat and used for fruit salads, sorbets or tarts. 

STORAGE

It is advised not to keep any whole melon goods in the refrigerator as this might impact the continuing ripening process and flavour. Keep it out at room temperature and use within a week. Any unused sliced bits should be wrapped in cling film or stored in air tight containers, which may then be kept in the refrigerator for up to one week. It is not recommended to freeze.

FUN FACTS & TIPS

The Piel de Sapo belongs to the melon family and is known for its unique skin. Translated from Spanish, it means "toad skin" because of its blotchy green appearance and wart-like cracks. It is also known as Santa Claus melon because it has a long shelf life, traditionally until Christmas, where a Spanish family can still enjoy the last melon of the season!
