These seedless white guavas, sometimes known as apple guavas, get their name from their colour, which is extremely similar to that of a green apple. The fruit has a wrinkled, smooth surface and is about spherical in shape. The guava's most appealing characteristics are a blend of subtle tropical smells and firmness with the crunchiness of apples and pears. Because the flavour is mild and bland, they are often chopped into slices and served with salted Plum Powder. Making it very addictive, refreshing and delicious!
Guava can be stored at room temperature, however refrigeration can only extend the shelf life of the guava somewhat, so it should be consumed as soon as possible. After 4 days in the refrigerator, the guava is overripe and should be discarded. When a guava is overripe, it will dent when force is applied to it.
Although the guava is a fruit, its culinary uses are practically unlimited. Guavas can be eaten whole or sliced and eaten fresh. They can be used in both sweet and savoury, fresh, cooked, hot and cold dishes. Bananas, chocolate, mango, ginger, pears, vanilla, cinnamon and sweet wines like Gewuerztraminer are ideal ingredients that bring out the flavour of the guava even better. Guavas go well with soft cheeses such as chèvre and mascarpone, but also with shellfish such as prawns, scallops and halibut, as well as fatty meats such as bacon, pork loin and pork chops. Guavas are an excellent addition to ice cream, gelatine, sorbets and puddings. Guavas can be baked, sautéed, caramelised, pureed, preserved and canned. Guava can also be used in juice blends and dried or dehydrated to change its texture and concentrate its flavour.
