Snow pears, sometimes known as autumn moon pears, snow pears or autumn moon pears are a more expensive hybrid variety imported from Japan (the Akizuki pear). They are also spherical, however their skin is yellowish/brown. Their size varies from medium to large, and their white flesh is crispy and silky when ripe, with blotches on the surface, but it has a very high juice content that may reach more than 80%.
With only one bite, the juice oozes out and may even be squeezed by hand. Pears are frequently gritty and sandy in taste, but the Qiuyue pear is particularly smooth and crisp. Snow pears grow naturally in Asia, including China, and have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for their health benefits.
Check the pears regularly for ripeness by gently pressing near the stem end. Once they reach the desired ripeness, you can transfer them to the refrigerator to slow down the ripening process if you're not planning to eat them immediately. Store snow pears separately from other fruits and vegetables, as they release ethylene gas which can cause other produce to ripen and spoil faster. Do not wash snow pears before storing them, as moisture can promote spoilage. Only wash them just before eating.
Do you know Pears are often fried or boiled in China to make delectable sweets? Which entails boiling fresh, skinless pears (without their cores) in a dish. The meatier varieties of pears, such as Qiu Yue, are excellent for steaming since their less fibrous structure softens up well. Some people want to leave their skin on. Pear chunks may also be boiled with white fungus, jujubes, goji berries, and lily bulbs to make delicious, soupy desserts. Adding hawthorn berries or preserved plums helps to balance out the sweetness with some acidity.
