Papple is a relatively new fruit to most people. They may look like an apple, but it is not one at all. It is best described as a pear disguised as an apple, which is a cross between European and Asian pears and has a red-orange colouring on a yellow background. It has the crisp and juicy texture of an Asian pear but the stronger flavour of a European pear.
Unlike the normal European pear, Papple is ready to eat and does not need to be ripened or softened. It also has a very long shelf life and stores well in a refrigerator.
The name Papple may make one smile, but for its breeders in Australia it was a serious undertaking. In the realm of hybrids, the journey from farm to table is essentially a trial-and-error process, with only one in 1,000 crossbreeding attempts being successful. Even when a solid parent pair is available, it may take 10 to 15 years before the next crop is ready for the public.
