Shepard Avocado

Shepard large avocados are larger and have a smooth, glossy green skin. They are often used for healthy breakfasts and brunches, such as avocado toast, salads and desserts, because their flesh is firmer and does not turn brown when cut, making them ideal for slicing. Their flavour is rich, savoury, and nutty. The peculiar flavour is reminiscent of earthy grass, but in a good way. A ripe avocado is soft, creamy and buttery and has a similar texture to a banana, but it has a bit more bite and is fattier. They are often used for healthy breakfasts and brunches, such as in avocado toast, salads and desserts.

STORAGE

To check if your Shepard avocado is ripe, gently push around the top of the avocado. If the flesh yields, it's time to eat. To be on the safe side, don't be hurried if your avocado isn't ripe yet. Give the avocado 1-3 days to ripe and once it is, store it in the fridge so it does not spoil.

FUN FACTS & TIPS

Perhaps the most difficult aspect of the Shepard avocado is determining when it is ripe. Unlike Hass avocados, they do not change colour when they are ripe for eating - the skin remains the same shiny green colour long after ripening. If you cut open a Shepard avocado before it is ripe, you cannot spread it on toast or even use it in a salad because the flesh is too stiff.
